Gosh, your reactions are veeery interesting to me. I liked the movie very much: yes, it's not THE movie of the century, but there are not so many around us, are they? In my opinion, Penn uses all the skills and tricks of the Ol' Good Hollywood cinema - for a purpose (a good purpose, as I see it): he lets the viewer gently try to identify him/herself with the main character, along the slow journey through great landscapes and music and people and time (as happens in every good road-movie or better every good Bildungsroman) BUT this self-identification is never smooth nor complete: because there's something wrong in what the guy does. Until the end, of course, when the viewer gets the revelation of what was wrong exactly... and the load of the loss falls over his head like a huge dead elk. Because you cannot be happy alone, can you? The difficult task is building good, functional, rich human relationships, those precious little things that let us shine - that's what we forget along the road, sometimes, hunting some kind of a goal... that's not so important after all. Well, at least that's how I felt it. But I'm ready to swear that's how most of the people my generation (grown after the hippie golden times, this part of the world) may feel. In any case: "happiness is real only when shared" is a great slogan, I subscribe it and hereby thank Mr. Penn for the effort. By the way, have you seen "Milk"?
